It's turned into our annual thing. We have our "Moms back to school breakfast" after the first day of school.
It's been at my house every year and I look forward to it. Everyone makes or brings something yummy.
This year I made Monkey Bread* and Egg Brunch Bake.
The "noise" level in my kitchen is enough to make a man run for his life. I actually had to raise my voice to get the "hen's" attention at one point!
I think it's something we all look forward to. It's a chance to take a breath since the first day of school and the night before the first day of school are spent pretty much holding our breath. We get all our kids supplies packed up and labeled. We get their new clothes laid out ready to be slid into the next morning. We give them a good breakfast, make sure they are shiny from head to toe. Take their pictures in front of the house, at the bus stop with their friends. Wave good-bye to them as their bus pulls away. We think of them the whole rest of the day, wondering if they are behaving, making friends, eating their lunch. We wait for them at the bus stop to come home...hoping they are on the right bus. We listen to the stories of the first day....how great their teacher is, who sits next to them, what they played at recess. And so it goes. The beginning of another year.
So, we look forward to our time. We eat and drink mimosas out of fancy glasses. We toast each other and our kids. We compare school stories. Tell each other what we've heard about this or that. We talk about mom stuff, wife stuff...girl stuff. Our "breakfast" usually turns into lunch and we sit and linger as long as we can. I know it's an indulgence. And I know we are lucky. We don't have to run off to a full time job or have someone else put our kids on the bus. Don't worry the days to follow are filled with house cleaning, part time jobs, little ones still home to care for all day, errands, car pools, making dinner etc., etc., etc.
It's one day and we deserve it. And I ain't feeling guilty. Cheers!
*Easy Monkey Bread
3/4 cup sugar
1 TBS ground cinnamon
3 cans (7.5 oz each) refrigerated buttermilk biscuits
½ cup (1 stick) butter or margarine melted
40z cream cheese; softened
1/2 c powdered sugar
3/4 cup sugar
1 TBS ground cinnamon
3 cans (7.5 oz each) refrigerated buttermilk biscuits
½ cup (1 stick) butter or margarine melted
40z cream cheese; softened
1/2 c powdered sugar
1-2 TBS milk
Preheat oven to 350° Mix sugar and cinnamon in a medium bowl; set aside.
Cut each biscuit into quarters; ( I use a scissor it's easier) roll in cinnamon sugar. Place half biscuit pieces in a greased 12 cup fluted tube pan (Bundt pan);Drizzle with half the melted butter. Top with remaining biscuit pieces; drizzle with remaining butter. Sprinkle with remaining cinnamon-sugar
Bake 40-45 minutes or until golden brown. Cool in pan 5 minutes then invert onto serving plate
Beat cream cheese and powdered sugar in a small bowl with an electric mixer. Add 1 TBS of the milk and beat until blended. Beat in enough of the remaining mile until glaze is of desired consistency. Drizzle over warm bread. Serve warm.
