PostHeaderIcon Getting Dinner ready - Three ideas that work for us!

TwitterMoms and Samsung have teamed up to to offer an amazing sweepstakes where they are giving away the Samsung French Door Refrigerator pictured above. They asked that we list our three tips for getting dinner ready in a flash.

1. Slow cooker. We are always looking for new ways to use our "Crock Pots", They are the best way to get a nice hot dinner on the table in a hurry. Do all the prep earlier on and then you can sit down to dinner with your family without spending all that prep time in the kitchen. The Beef Barley Soup on the sidebar is one we make. Pulled pork is definitely another favorite.

2.Planning ahead. This is key and could possibly be number one. Look over your weekly circulars from your local markets. Make your lists in conjunction to what is on sale that week. Keep all the recipes you want to in folders organized by "dinners", "desserts" etc. Then plan your weekly menu according to what is going on in your house that week. For example Monday could be an easy night where you have time to bread and fry chicken cutlets. But then Tuesday is a crazy night and you could plan to make something in the slow cooker or just get pizza for a treat.

3. Keep it simple. Dinner does not have to be a ten course meal every night. Don't fall for the pictures you see in magazines. Every other family doesn't sit down to a roast chicken with all the fixin's and homemade apple pie for dessert. Sometimes that's possible. But what's really important is that you sit down with your family and catch up on each others day. Connecting with each other is more important than a perfectly cooked pork roast.

Great tips!! Another one that has really been working for me. Spend a little time writing up index cards for dinners, not necessarily recipes (unless you need it)but everything you need for each meal. Then match up the meals to the sales or coupons. This also keeps me from forgetting the one thing you might need, so no more extra trips to the store. Then I keep the cards right on the board so the answer to "what's for dinner?" 10 times is easily answered. I try to make it a mix of quick and easy, crock pot and maybe one "real" dinner and choose according to the days activities.
I've cut my grocery bill by about $30/week and had no take out for 5 weeks!! Try it!

Love the third tip - because that's my dirty little secret. Nightly dinner is rarely a main and two sides and all-in-one dishes are favorites because I don't have to do anything else.

Happy SITS Saturday Sharefest!

I try to cook dinner at least 4 nights a week for my family - and love a big Sunday dinner!

Crock pots are Gods gift to the kitchen - especially on those hectic days when you can't find your own head. There's nothing better than coming home to the smell of a pot roast that's been cooking all day...

I've never done pulled pork in the slow cooker. I need to give it a try.
