Cara: Great job!
That's what my doctor said to me this morning. After a not so good check up back in March, I really needed to make some changes in my diet. I did and it paid off big. Which is great and gives me incentive to keep going in the right direction...I need to get my HDL level up and that's by more exercise he tells me. Yuck.
But what struck me as I sat there in the exam room talking to him was two things.
One, how I took my health for granted. I am good with the gyno checkups but regular checkups not so much. Really not at all. But a thyroid condition last year, and bad blood results this year really made me stop and rethink my plan, or lack thereof. I was a little surprised how happy and relieved I was when he read my chart and was so happy with the results himself. I am always so good (as is with most moms I know) with getting my kids to the doctor and checked up and immunized etc. But never really did what I was supposed to for me. Maybe it's cause we are accountable to school etc. that we have all our ducks in row, and that parenting instinct that says we must do things just so. And maybe because I am not accoutable to anyone if I don't go to the doctor when I am supposed to. Or am I? I think I am to my family. I owe them the best me I can be. And that means physically too. So when he told me "great job Cara!" I thought "yeah me".
Which brings me to my second thought. "Great job" he said. Which made me feel slightly weird. I am usually the one saying "great job!" to my kids, husband. whomever. As a mom I think we are conditioned to let everyone else know when they did a great job. But we don't really hear it too much.
No one says great job when we do the "transparent" things....like go to work everyday, or mop the floor (no one walks in and says "Wow Cara great job on the floor!" but I am sure there would be fodder for discussion should they walk in and find melted ice cream stuck to the floor), or make dinner or whatever is "expected". I don't even think we think about it. It's not like we are expecting "great job" when we do these things.
I left there a little proud of myself. The nurse said "wow I wish I had a sticker to give you!!" I laughed. But as I walked to my car I thought I wouldn't have minded getting that sticker.

Cara: Doing it the right way is not easy....
Eating I mean. That title I suppose can apply to most anything. But this time I am talking about eating right. What a pain in the ass, seriously.
I cook dinner 6 out of 7 nights a week, so I don't mean eating McDonald's every night or getting take out all the time.
Diva and I are trying an eating plan that I have been wanting to try for awhile. The first 17 days are basically a detox of sugar in your body. Nothing I already didn't know. I like this program because it steers you along and tells you what to eat but also give you options to switch it up if you'd like.
But it's a lot of dam work. Usually every Sunday I peruse the supermarket circulars, make my list and write down my menus for the week. I know, I know...OCD remember?
So again it's not like I don't put thought into what we are eating all week. But let's just say it's much easier to throw chicken fingers and Orieda fries in the oven and call it a day.
When you have to make salmon for dinner on Tuesday you can't exactly buy it on Saturday and let it sit around for three days. So you have to go buy it the night before or that day. Well it's Tuesday night (I wrote this yesterday) and I have been to the supermarket four times since Sunday. Fresh fish, more lettuce, fresh fruit...you need to buy it as you eat it. A can of Hormel chili you can put in a time capsule and eat when you open it up 100 years from now.
And you have to prepare for all this good eating. And of course guess who is making all the lunches a day ahead for the Diva and myself? Yeah. So hence why I sat writing about salmon at 11:00 pm. Which by the way I made tonight and it was so good. I have never made salmon before (not a big fish fan) but the recipe I used was really good (I will share at the end of this post). Which is the upside to all this. I tried something new, something healthy and was pleasantly surprised.
There's a lot of reading, planning and preparing but I am sure it's all worth it. I haven't been feeling up to par lately and I know it has a lot to do with the winter and being cooped up indoors, but I need to pay attention now to what may become problems later on in life. I don't want to take 9 million pills and not be active 20 years from now. I may be a dollar short and day late but better late than never right?
Baked Salmon (serves 2)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 6 tablespoons light olive oil
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
- 2 (6 ounce) salmon fillets
Directions
- In a medium glass bowl, prepare marinade by mixing garlic, light olive oil, basil, salt, pepper, lemon juice and parsley. Place salmon fillets in a medium glass baking dish, and cover with the marinade. Marinate in the refrigerator about 1 hour, turning occasionally.
- Preheat oven to 375 °
- Place fillets in aluminum foil, cover with marinade, and seal. Place sealed salmon in the glass dish, and bake 35 to 45 minutes, until easily flaked with a fork.
Jenn's two cents: It's much harder to eat healthy than to not. Processed foods line the supermarket aisles but healthy ones have to be sought out. It's also much more expensive to eat healthy - all those fresh ingredients add up - but it's worth it in the long run. I am a huge salmon fan and order it only when we go out - so I am going to try this one - sounds delicious. My favorite cookbook for healthy eaing is the Sonoma Diet Cookbook - so many yummy recipes - you are welcome to it any time. Can't wait for the weather to warm up so we can get back outside!
