My pansies were just a taste, a tease really. They have since been moved from the front to other pots for now...until they becoming to long and leggy then they will have to go. The front of the house is pretty much done, so hubby and I have our yearly same old "discussion".
Me: I have to get more flowers today
He: More flowers? I thought you were done?
Me: No, I am done in the front I have to do the back now.
He: Why? We have so many perennials now, that's enough
Me. No it's not.
He: Just buy a few periennials and get rid of all the pots that
you have in the backyard.
Me: No.
He: Tell me what you want I will pick them up for you.
Me: No
He: You know what? Do what you want.
Me: I always do.
Flash forward to mid-summer when everythings a bloom....
Guest: Your yard looks so pretty does a landscaper do it all?
He: (chest puffed up) No. WE do it ourselves.
(Me: Hrmph!)
So off Ethel and I go today to explore a new nursery and hopefully hit pay"dirt" and find some good stuff. I will be armed with my outside notebook (of course, you didn't think I would have one? Are you new?) It will not be my only excursion to find the perfect flowers. This year I am going to put in a little garden with about four plants and some herbs. I will still have bathrooms to clean and laundry to do today..but I can do that when the sun goes down...my yard won't wait!

Cara: Pondering Pansies
I was picking on April this week but I have to admit this weekend was pretty good. Sunshine on the lacrosse field (even if it was a little chilly at 9 a.m.), walking both days and....planting.
I really don't like to buy dirt, it's like having to buy air. But I had to schlep the bag into the cart at the nursery nevertheless.
Pansies don't last very long around here, but I love them because the are the sign that warm weather really is on the way...and it won't be Sprinter for long. (Sprinter is my new word for when it says Spring on my calendar but I know better!!)
Pansies just look happy to me. I know I sound like some deranged gardener, but they do. I only plant them in my four pots that line my front walk. So it's not a back breaking gardening day but a pleasant one. Pots full of new freshly "bought" dirt and little plants that will get full and flowery now with April showers and sun.
Come mid to end of May they will be taken out and maybe replanted somewhere else since I learned they will bloom again in the fall with my mums. My pots will then be filled with all the annuals I will be itching to buy by then.
It's supposed to rain on and off for the next week and I am sure I won't be singing the praises of April showers by the end of it. But for now I will forget about my pansies during the day until I open the front door or pull up in the driveway and see them there. And for a minute it will make me happy. And that's what it's all about right? The little things.
Jenn's two cents: I planted some pansies this weekend too. Mine are squeezed in among the tulips that are getting ready to pop. It's nice to just see that burst of color out front. Little things can sometimes make a world of difference.

Went to the nursery yesterday to get some flowers. And so it starts. I will probably buy some kind of living thing everyday now until the middle of June. I have a favorite nursery I go to every year. I buy flowers and plants everywhere, school plant sales, supermarket, Home Depot...wherever. But even though the nursery's prices aren't great I must go. I am embarrassed to say that I get a little giddy when I pull into the parking lot.
Rows and rows of impatiens, begonias, petunia, pansies. I want to buy 100 flats of flowers and plant them all. I love to walk in the green houses, stepping in puddles after flowers were watered. I love to read all the picks in the plants that tell me where and when I can plant them. The people that work there are cut from the same cloth as me. They are happy to be there. They are sunburned and a little dirty. They love to answer my questions. They love when I "know" my flowers and don't need any help. They tell me "happy planting" when I leave.
I get my stuff home and I can't wait to get at them and get them planted. Some days like yesterday I really didn't have a lot of time to get them all planted so some got in and some are sitting in their plastic pots waiting for me today. My plan was to get up early and get outside while it's still and quiet, before the day begins and the running starts.
Some people look at all this as a chore. "Some people" are a little envious of the mountainous piles of mulch showing up in front neighbors houses waiting to be spread in flower beds. (her mulch better get here by Fridayish...I am just saying).
A day spent among flowers is a day well spent as far as I'm concerned. It's good for your soul. 
Jenn's two cents: I started my planting a little early this year - and I tried some "new" things and am glad I did. Pulling up in front of my house and seeing all the beautiful flowers makes me happy. I don't even mind the weeding! Enjoy your day among the flowers. I am thinking about stripping some chairs today.
