PostHeaderIcon Jenn: Sweet 16

Even when we think they aren't listening, they are. Our kids do listen. Last night at my very first sweet 16 party, I got to listen the birthday girl talk about all the important people in her life. The first ones were her parents. She thanked them - in public - for always being there for her. She also talked about her brothers, her aunts and uncles, her grandparents and cousins, and all of her friends and the impact they have made so far in her life.

As a mom of daughters, I know the road isn't always easy - but last night, listening to Miss P praise her parents, made me know it is all worth it. All the sacrifice, all the yelling, all the driving to and from, all the frustration and all the joy lead to our kids eventually recognizing and appreciating everything we do for them. They may not show it everyday, but it is there, buried inside, to come out at a Sweet 16 candle ceremony.

It is not always easy to take a stand with your kids, and sometimes we feel like giving in just to get them to be quiet. Giving into our kids doesn't make them better people, being their parent does. Last night I got to see first hand what being a great parents gets you...a great kid. So a toast to my friends Cara and Tony - thanks for showing me what great parenting can do.

Keep a copy of last nights candle ceremony close at hand - now you have proof how your 16-year-old really feels, even when she doesn't show it!

Cara: Thanks. Sometimes as a parent you get it right. (...sometimes)

Jenn,
I'm really touched that everyone loved my candle ceremony so much.
Just wait, it's not as easy as it looks, Mae and Lu will certainly need your help writing all those speeches!

But in all seriousness, us kids may not show it, but I meant ever word I said that night, and Mae and Lu will say the same things about you when it comes time for their big nights!

Thanks for the reminder of how lucky I really am!
