PostHeaderIcon Jenn: TMI

TMI - which stands for too much information for all you non-texters.  TMI is flooding our brains and causing us to worry.  I think the Internet, twitter, cable TV, facebook and other social sites lets too much information into our brains.  How can we live a carefree life when every tragedy is shown to us 24/7?  Even stupid, non-news items (Charlie Sheen) are thrown at us non-stop.

When I was a kid... my kids always groan when I say that.. life was simpler.  Maybe not a lot simpler but we had less information.  I am not saying that ignorance is bliss - but a little ignorance lets you sleep better at night.  I remember the Son of Sam serial killer.  It was big news. We would watch the news or read the paper to find out what was happening. We sought the news out.  Now the news is literally shoved at us 24/7.  We hear about the Long Island serial killer at every turn.  Each bone found sends out a news alert.

Charlie Sheen - who cares? Really? The media again shoves him at us at every turn.  I have stopped watching the news - it feels like a repeat of the day before, day after day until the next sensational headline grabs the reporters attention and then they bang us over the head with that.  I read the paper because I can skip the stories that don't interest me. I get my news online.  I try not to worry.  I try to take each day as it comes and live life and try to find some joy.  All the information out there clouds that sunny outlook.  I don't want to stick my head in the sand, I just want a little less information.

I couldn't agree with you more, Jenn! Last night, I was watching the news and there was a horrible story about a woman who was allegedly raped by 2 police officers. The news station decided that it was appropriate to restate, verbatim, the victims graphic account of her brutal attack. I actually gasped at the vicious and unthinkable description of her horrific attack. Later, could not close my eyes without thinking about it. I wanted to go back in time and turn off the TV so that I would not have had to hear how brutally she was hurt. The public does not need to hear every gritty detail of every story. I wish we could go back to being a more discreet society...but I am not optimistic. Good post! I am glad to know I am not alone in my feelings about this!
