Comfort Zone: 1. Range of minimum and maximum exposure or risk within which an entity can operate without coming under undue stress.

We all operate, I think most of the times in what is our comfort zone. It's easier. It's comfy.
I know I do most time. I need to stop.
I think the apple cart needs to get shaken up now and again.
Like I say, I need to take a cue from my kids who are braver than I give them credit for.
What's your comfort zone? Can you do something to step out of the box? Just a little?
Think about it. You never know what may be over there. Maybe something good. Maybe not. At least you will know.

Lesson:
1.The act or an instance of instructing; teaching.
2. An experience, example, or observation that imparts beneficial new knowledge or wisdom.
3. The knowledge or wisdom so acquired.

Lessons are still learned I think anyway,  for us adults in everyday life whether we are paying attention or not. If you think back to your week, everything thing you did and it's result could be a lesson learned.

We spend a lot of time as parents, teaching lessons to our children, an exhausting amount most of the time.

School comes first. Honor your commitments. Do the right thing. Do your best. Be a good friend. And so on.

Sometimes because we always have their best interest at heart and from being on the outside looking in, know what they should be doing, and what they need to do to achieve what they want and need.

One of my chicks made me so proud this week by being brave, confident and using the advice his parents pounded  instilled in him and acheived what he set out to do. And even went on to show us that loyalty, respect and doing what he felt was the right thing were all factors in making his decision. Wow. Score one for mom and dad.

But as I take a step back and think...do I apply that to my own choices that lay before me? Do I take my own advice? I should. I give good advice sometimes. Am I smart enough to realize that there's a lesson for me to be learned here as well?

Think about your own kids and what went on in their lives this week...big or small. How did they handle it? Well? You can pat yourself on the back for that. But what can they teach you? Something I'm sure.

Can this little boy who can be the beat of my heart and the bane of my existance simultaneously, teach me the lessons I need to know?

I think he can.

Kid - noun, verb, (kid·ded, kid·ding) adjective, noun
1. Informal . a child or young person.
2. (used as a familiar form of address.)
3. a young goat

Duh. We all know what a kid is. Number three just made me lol. It has occured to me there's not one hour of the day I am not thinking about or doing something for or because of one of my kids.

Is that normal? Am I nuts? I don't know. Most conversations hubby and I have are about them. And if they are not, they are interrupted by one of them. (usually the short one)

The adult night out last week was because of them. The cool stuff I won at the chinese auction ended up being for them, for crying out loud.

Makes me wonder what's to come when they all don't need me anymore. Will I know what to talk about? Will I have anything to talk about?

Maybe that's what those days of solitude are there for....to figure it all out.

Solitude - 1. the state of being or living alone; seclusion: to
                      enjoy one's solitude.
                2. remoteness from habitations, as of a place;
absence of human activity: the solitude of the
                    mountains.

The busier I get (it never seems to end...but mostly good so really can't complain) the more I seek out solitude. I actually schedule it into my to do list lately.

There are some days that are so FULL of chatter. So full of busy chit chat..."total is $134.45" "I will have a tall skinny vanilla bean latte with a shot of raspberry extra milk" Hi how are you haven't seen you in a long time...." "today for PTA we need to do this that and the other thing" "manicure and pedicure...yes...sit here? No the water's fine...yes I am using this color on my nails too...thank you have a nice day....fill it up regular, yes charge....no you can't have 12 brownies for a snack after school...yes so and so can come over....don't use all the water bottles in the fridge to hydrate the neighborhood...I don't care if you don't like what I made for dinner...finish your homework...get ready for practice...take a shower...I said get in the shower...get in the shower NOW!!....hello book club girls...your house is lovely, how are your kids...how are you feeling....the book? Oh that book....lets talk about it now for 3 hours...great time let's chat about it all the way home in the car..."

Get the picture? Yeah. Lots of chatter. LOTS of conversation. Lots of getting tired of hearing my own voice. There's a point that I need to shut it down. I recently gave myself a two week time out. That was long even for me to shut up. But it taught me a good lesson in that for me, I need to shut it down more often maybe rather then for an extended period of time.

I need to recharge maybe you could say. There's a lot to be said about solitude...being alone with one's thoughts. There's no conversation, out loud conversation anyway...lots of inner discussions that's for sure.

Solitude is good for the soul and no better time when Spring has sprung and you get enjoy be outside in your solitude. Winter solitude may lead to napping and overeating (not necessarily bad I suppose, in moderation....becoming bear like is not an option I'm afraid).

Find a little solitude. You may be surprised what the quiet has to say.

Authentic - adjective; not false or copied; genuine; real

I prefer authentic, thank you. "What you see is what you get"....

One thing I know for sure about my family unit of five is that we are authentic. What you see is what you get. The way we are at home when the porch light is on and the doors are locked for the night is the same way we act when we walk out that front door in the morning. This could maybe be perceived as a good or a bad thing. I guess that would depend on if you appreciated our authenticity or not.

I truly prefer an authentic person. Even if I don't particularly appreciate them so much. I have a family-in-law person I detest. But the fact that they are authentically a direct descendant of Satan is easier for me to swallow than the one that may smile in my face and stab me in my back.

We can't necessarily let it "all hang out" all the time. But I don't think that's not being authentic. That's just not being gross or rude.

For example, I may have been known to swear like a sailor on occasion. Not something that I am particularly proud of...but it is what it is. But when I am running my PTA meeting I don't drop f-bombs. That's just being polite.

But those who present a completely different face to the world, but when they lock the door on the asylum they live in, and become their ugly authentic selves...well...ew. Kinda like "marizpan frosting on a sardine" (another quote I adore!), pretty on the outside but stinks on the inside.

I like authentic. Good or bad. At least I can make my own decisions like if I want to invite you over for a BBQ or drop kick you to Mars. At least I know I am getting what I see. Keep it real.

Affirmation  - 1. the act of affirming or the state of being affirmed
2. a statement of the existence or truth of something; assertion

When my kids were little it was always "Mommy watch me do this! Mommy watch me do that!" They always needed to have me see their latest trick and tell them how great they were. I suppose in a different way they all still do the same thing with a little less jumping up and down. Now I get a phone call about an awesome grade or great thing a professor said. Or a get quick slip into a conversation about a great thing they did that day. I get eye contact from across the field after a shining moment. Affirmation. The fact that they still want to "tell" me first, get that affirmation that I still think they are the best thing since sliced bread makes me happy. And I guess its an affirmation to me that they know that I really do.

As adults, I would first think we don't need affirmation as much. Some adults I have come across, have a sense of entitlement whereas they don't need any affirmation. I mean why would they? They are entitled to every thing for no apparent reason.

But aside from the "entitled" I think we "normal" adults need some affirmation sometimes too. I know lots of times close friends and I run things by each other just to make sure we haven't lost our minds. (because it is everyone else..it's certainly not US!!) I know I run things by my parents to make sure I didn't jump on the parenting crazy train with some decisions I make. One of the best things about being married to someone who really can be my polar opposite, is that I can get affirmation that I did the right thing or handled something the right way. 'Cause if he says I did then I can be pretty dam sure I did...since he mostly can't make heads or tails of the wild woman he married. :)

I think it's ok to seek out a little affirmation once in awhile, of course within in reason. Needy is REALLY not attractive. We can all use a pat on the back once in awhile. Even if it affirms we are not crazy. Well, not this time anyway.

PostHeaderIcon Cara: Friday's Word of the Week

I am going to try this on Fridays for awhile and see how it goes. Not every day can one come up with something meaningful or insightful to wax poetic about. So in looking back at my week I am going to try to think of a word(s) that reminds me of the past week's goings on.

 Accountability [uh-koun-tuh-bil-i-tee]; noun
1. the state of being accountable, liable, or answerable.
2. Education . a policy of holding schools and teachers accountable for students' academic progress by linking such progress with funding for salaries, maintenance

(I swear I didn't add that second definition I just got it from http://www.dictionary.com/ )

Accountability or lack thereof really is what I mean...bugs the beejuzus outta me.

If you say you are going to do something, do it.

If you represent an "organization" and should always have the well being of whom you represent in the forefront of your mind, then you MUST be accountable to them. And when they ask you a question or expect you have been doing what you should of all along to get the job done, then you have better dam well done it.

If you treat someone poorly, say I don't know, a friend that has never treated you poorly for example...you don't get to act like everything is peachy keen the next time you see them. No. You need either to own your ridiculous schizophrenic behavior or you need to say something. Anything. "Sorry I didn't take my meds today" or "Sorry I am an idiot" or "Sorry someone dropped a 10lb brick on my head and I didn't know what I was saying". Something. Be accountable.

We make decisions for our children because they either can't (and we are the parents and we need to sometimes) or because you are a helicopter parent that needs to manipulate you child's every calculated move (for some weird selfish end result) then own it. Be accountable. And if it turns out maybe not the way you wanted then own it. Try to fix. Be accountable that you screwed up, maybe for all the right reasons but own it.

"Some favorite expressions of small children:
“It’s not my fault. . . They made me do it. . .
I forgot.”  Some favorite expressions of adults: “It’s not my job. . . No one told me. . . It couldn’t be helped.” True freedom begins and ends with personal accountability." - Dan Zadra
